Cowgirl Volleyball Falls to Ninth-Ranked Rams in Four Sets

The Wyoming volleyball team (23-8, 12-6 MW) closed out the regular season with a four-set loss (19-25, 15-25, 25-21, 20-25) against the ninth-ranked Colorado State Rams (29-2, 17-1 MW) on Wednesday night in Ft. Collins.

Sophomores Laura Beach and Kayla Slofkiss led the way with 11 kills each while Beach finished with four total blocks and hit .a team-high .269 (11-4-26). Slofkiss recorded a double-double with 13 digs as well. Senior Erin Kirby and junior Bridget Shanahan followed with nine kills each and junior libero Allison Waldvogel had a match-high 23 digs. Wyoming hit .174 (49-24-144) for the match.

Colorado State had three players reach double-digits in kills led by Kelsey Snider. She finished with 11 and five block assists while hitting .391 (11-2-23) for the night. Jasmine Hanna and Alexandra Poletto each finished with ten kills while Poletto had a match-high eight block assists. The Rams hit .255 (55-17-149) for the match and out blocked the Cowgirls 13-6.

It was all even at three through the first six points of the match until a 4-0 run by Colorado State gave it a 7-3 lead. The Cowgirls battled back with a 10-6 run to pull even at 13. The two teams traded the next couple of points, but with it all tied up at 16 the Rams scored the next six points to pull ahead 22-16. The Cowgirls would score the next two points to pull within four, 22-18. The Rams closed out the set scoring three of four to take it 25-19.

The Cowgirls gained some momentum in the second set by taking an early 8-5 lead. Three straight points by CSU pulled it even at eight. Wyoming quickly regained a 12-10 lead, but the Rams scored four unanswered to pull ahead 14-12. Out of a Wyoming timeout, a kill by Slofkiss ended the scoring drought to make it 14-13. Unfortunately, Colorado State scored the final 11 of 13 to win the set, 25-15, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Behind solid serving from freshman Lily Austin (SHS Class of 2014), the Cowgirls went up 4-0 in the third set. The Rams got in the scoring column but Wyoming continued to hold the lead 6-3. CSU pulled to within one, 6-5, but a kill by Slofkiss ended the run. Colorado State scored four unanswered to take its first lead 9-7. The Cowgirls scored four of the next seven to pull to within one, 12-11, unfortunately the Rams quickly went back up four, 15-11. An attack error by the Rams helped Wyoming climb its way back into it and tie it up at 18 all. After a kill by CSU, the Cowgirls closed out the set on a 7-2 run to win 25-21.

In the fourth set, Colorado State stormed out to a 9-4 lead. The Cowgirls responded with a 10-5 run to pull even at 14 all. After a timeout by the Rams, they would score the next four of five to regain the 18-15 advantage. Wyoming rallied back to make it 19 all. Unfortunately, CSU closed out the set on a 6-1 run to win, 25-20, and the match 3-1.

The Cowgirls close out the 2014 regular season with a 23-8 overall record and a 12-6 mark in Mountain West play.
